A St. Louis City firefighter has died while fighting a fire on Thursday. Firefighter Benjamin Polson was killed when a roof collapsed just moments after the crew had decided to back out of the building due to the intensity of the fire. The roof then collapsed under that intense heat, burying two firefighters in the rubble.
Polson died at the scene while the other firefighter was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. The fire was called in around noon to the vacant home in the 5900 block of Cote Brilliante. There was an early report that victims may be inside prompting the rescue attempt. Polson joined the department in 2019 and his father is a retired fire captain with the department. The BackStoppers organization is assisting the family.
